Asking for an Assessment

The end of the summer is approaching fast. The 2015-2016 school year will be upon us before we know it! For some of you, the new school year will bring with it the all too familiar IEP meetings you have been attending for months or even years. For another group of you, this new school year is an opportunity to address your child’s educational needs for the first time. If you fall under the second group this blog is perfect for you! We will help you with the beginning process of the IEP. The first thing needed for your child is an assessment to be done to determine his/her needs.

 HERE ARE A FEW QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT CONSIDER ASKING YOURSELF:

Have you been suspicious that your child could have a learning disability, behavioral needs, or emotional needs?

Do you see your child struggling repeatedly to make average grades even with an excess amount of help?

Does your child’s behavior seem to impact his/her learning?

Does your child have behavior issues related to your child’s disability which have caused him/her to be suspended or expelled due to his/her school’s failure to address?

Do you notice your child struggle with reading, writing, math, or any other areas of academics?

Most importantly, do you feel that with added supports or services your child could have better access to his/her curriculum?

 If you answered yes to any of the previous questions it is probable that investing some time into having your child assessed could be in his/her best interest. To begin you must first write a letter requesting for your child to be assessed in whichever area you feel is an area of need for him/her. The process of writing a letter requesting  an assessment could be stressful if you want to make sure you are writing the letter correctly. The writing of this letter initiates the Special Education process for your child. This assessment is used to determine your child’s needs and be able to work to finding programs that could work for them.
