5 Summer Travel Tips
By now most of your children have began their summer vacation. You might be trying to plan a vacation with your children but you are very nervous as to how they will react? Traveling with a special needs child might take a lot more preparation than you are used to, but a vacation is not an impossible thing to accomplish. We have a few tips below to help you make the most of your summer vacation with your children.
#1 Assess your child’s tolerance level
-think about how your child does in stressful situations and unfamiliar environments. Based on the tolerance level your child has you can narrow it down to some places over others
#2 Find something your child enjoys
-finding an activity or place your child enjoys going to can help make it a more enjoyable and smoother trip. It is important to plan this vacation around your child’s interest so s/he can be successful on this trip.
#3 Practice & Prepare
-are you flying? Is this a road trip? With either form of transportation you can practice the events that would take place with your child to better prepare yourself and your child for possible events. Of course we can’t practice and anticipate everything that happens, but we can try and prepare as best we can. If you are planning a trip with new activities for your child it could be beneficial to try similar activities at home to front load your child. This could prevent your child from being overwhelmed on your trip. The more you prepare the better for your child. Some airports are starting to offer programs to help prepare special needs children for the airport.
#4 Stay calm
-it is a given fact that unexpected events can take place. We can never fully anticipate all our children’s actions, so it is very important you remain calm. Maybe people will look or make comments in regards to your child’s behavior, but don’t mind them. You know your child best and only you will know how to manage the situation.
#5 Prepare activities
-prepare activities for your child to be entertained while you arrive at your destination. Remember, positive reinforcement works wonders for compliant behaviors. Looking forward to a reward helps a child to have something to work towards.
But most importantly…
HAVE FUN!!!
