5 Tips to Good IEP Goals
One of the most important parts of your child’s IEP are the goals written for him/her. The goals set a standard for your child’s IEP. IEP Goals not only set a standard, but they also drive services for your child. These goals are the things that are being worked on with your child during their special education services. Having goals to address all of the areas of need that your child has is very important. However, not all goals are good IEP goals. It is important to understand what makes a good goal in order to help your child succeed.
1.IEP Goals should address all areas of identified need
Your child’s assessments will outline the areas of need for your child, it is important to have a goal addressing each need in order to help your child succeed.
2. IEP Goals should be measurable
In order to be able to track progress on IEP goals and to be able to measure progress, the goal should be measurable. Some times goals are written in which you cant tell how it will be measured. It needs to be able to be measured objectively such as with the use of standardized tests or quantitative data.
3.IEP Goals should be specific
Good goals are specific not only to your child, but to the intended outcome. It is okay to have goals for each specific area rather than one that address multiple things in one.
4.IEP Goals should provide meaningful progress
IEP goals should be designed to close the gap created by your child’s learning disability and to provide meaningful growth. A goal that will provide progress for your child is not the same as one that provides meaningful growth. It is possible to have progress, yet still leave your child behind. Meaningful progress is defined as providing 1.5 years growth in 1 year in order to close the gap.
5.IEP Goals are your benchmarks
Some district’s offer objectives toward the IEP goal. You should receive progress reports on the objective of the specific goal, met or not met. If your goals do not offer the objectives on the goals request that you want progress on the goal at each report card time. Remember, the comment of “making progress” is not measureable.
Any easy way to remember components is by remember an acronym by Wrightslaw:
SMART IEP goals are:
Specific
Measurable
Use Action words
Realistic
Time-limited
As a parent you are able to request any IEP goals to be proposed prior to the meeting if you wish to review and give feedback. This will help you to do some research and contribute to the writing of your child’s goals. We believe that having good goals is a very important part of your child’s IEP.
